Market Recap
Don't let the seemingly boring action in the indices fool you.  They are not moving at all and do not reflect the true picture of what is really going on behind the scenes in this market.  There are a ton of stocks on the rise.  So many great charts set ups producing powerful daily moves in many stocks.  We mentioned many stocks yesterday in the commentary that were on the move and those same stocks along with many more had big follow though moves to the upside today on heavy volume.  Yes, there is money to be made in this market on the long side while the major indices wonder aimlessly as if they didn't want us to know about all those stocks going up the past few days.

If all you looked at were these big winners, you would never know that the Dow was down 21 points today, or that the NASDAQ lost 4 points today and you would wonder how the S&P could only have gained 1 point today.  These moves are obviously sector moves because not all stocks are going up.  For instance, the retail sector is getting hammered; I believe it is partly because of what we mentioned last night about that sector having trouble because of the hurricane.  In any case, stocks like ANF, URBN, BEBE, AEOS and many others in the group are getting crushed.  On the flip side many companies that will benefit from the hurricane are going up in a big way.  Oil and energy related stocks have also been climbing high along with the biotech group.  The biotech's were strong before the hurricane so their move may not be related but at the same time, they may be being bid up because some believe there will be a epidemic of disease breaking out in the hurricane affected areas, in which case medical stocks could run-up in speculation of that happening.

Hurricane Related Stocks
Tonight I have a list of stocks that could benefit from the hurricane as far as a substantial pick-up in their businesses over the long haul.  The hurricane damage will take years to clean up and rebuild and these companies are going to get a lot of contracts for business.  Many have moved up already but do not worry, wait for them to fall back after the hurricane coverage is out of the media.  Once these stocks have pulled back from the initial hype, they should be good longer term plays.  This list is not inclusive, there are more but here are a few to watch.

Concrete
CX, TXI, FRK

Building Materials
IIPI, BMHC, FWLT, USG, BLDR

Heavy Equipment
CAT, TEX, DE

Engineering
FLR, JEC

There are all kinds of companies that are going to either take a direct hit or prosper as a result of this natural disaster.  I am providing this small list of stocks tonight because of email requests for hurricane related stocks.  I personally do not want to profit from this tragedy but I also have to realize that life goes on and the business of Wall Street stops for almost nothing.  It may be cold blooded in a way but those are the facts.  The people on Wall Street make their living each day trading stocks just like many million of traders across the country.  This is there work.  If a disaster happens across the country, we feel for those people and we want to help, but we do not stop showing up for work each day because of it.  Doctors and lawyers still get up and go to work each day and so do stock traders, it is what we do.  If you feel you can not profit from other peoples misfortune, then do as I do and donate a portion of your profits to the relief efforts.  Let's take a little money out of the market to send to the Red Cross.  They need our help.  God bless those in the hurricane zone and even more so, God bless those good people who help them.
