Short and Long

The following is basic information that most members of STHQ already know but we have to repeat it for some very new members who may not understand what we are referring to when we say short and long.

Some think we are referring to short and long term trades as in the length of time we are going to hold a position but that is an incorrect assumption.

What we are referring to is as follows:

Long Buying a stock in the hope that the stock price will go up so we can profit from the advance in stock price.

Short Borrowing shares from a broker in the hope that we can profit from a fall in the stock price then buying (to cover) the shares to return to our broker and profiting from the difference between where we borrowed the shares from and what we paid to buy them back.

The purpose of these two types of trading vehicles is to be able to profit no matter which way a stock or market moves.  Everyone knows you can profit when stocks go up.  However there are many people who do not know you can profit from a falling stock price.  You do this by selling a stock short.
